Dr. Spire received his medical training in neurophysiology at McGill University and the Montreal Neurological Institute. His training in sleep medicine was under Professor Elio Lugaresi, one of the international leaders in the field of sleep medicine and research.
Dr. Spire was Director of the Neurophysiology laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco prior to joining the Neurology Faculty at the University of Chicago in 1976. There he founded and directed the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratories until 2007, having already established the second Sleep Disorders Clinic and Laboratory in the Midwest in 1979.
Dr. Spire has trained more than one hundred Sleep specialists, Neurophysiologists and Epileptologists nationally and internationally. As an Emeritus Professor of Neurology, his personal mission is to broaden the availability of Sleep Disorders Medicine to as many people as possible.
