Dr. Lisa J. Shives is the President and Medical Director of Northshore Sleep Medicine in Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Shives is a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and is Board Certified in Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the National Sleep Foundation. Dr. Shives is also an official spokesperson, for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
After receiving her M.D., from the University of Chicago in June 1999, Dr. Shives completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Yale University. Dr. Shives went on to complete her Internal Medicine Residency at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare. She has completed a fellowship in Medical Ethics at University of Chicago. She has worked as a hospital Internist for Evanston Northwestern Helathcare, and worked as a sleep and pain specialist for Horizon Hospice of Chicago. In July of 2005, prior to starting her own practice, Dr. Shives completed a Fellowship in Sleep Medicine at the University of Chicago.
As President and Medical Director of Northshore Sleep Medicine, Dr. Shives oversees the day to day operations of a fully functioning sleep disorders clinic. She is responsible for the clinical management of sleep patients, (which includes adults as well as children) and provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders.
As the official spokesperson for the AASM, in the Chicago area, Dr. Shives will be speaking to the Chicago Medical Society about sleep disorders this spring and recently completed a television interview with Vita Verden on "Senior Issues" for sleep problems in the elderly. Dr. Shives was also interviewed by ABC 7 Chicago on sleep problems in 2006. Dr. Shives wrote an article recently for Chicago Women's Magazine and was interviewed by the Evanston Review about her sleep practice and pediatric sleep studies. Dr. Shives also has given multiple lectures at community centers in the Evanston area. She has given lectures with a focus on women's sleep problems and those unique to the elderly. She has a special interest in pediatric sleep disorders which are vastly under recognized and which can cause serious academic and behavioral problems. Currently she is working with the Evanston Police Department on a community outreach program to educate the public, especially younger drivers, about the hazards of drowsy driving.
In addition to her medical qualifications, Dr. Shives has a Bachelor's degree in European History and Comparative Literature from the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Shives has also studied and worked abroad and is fluent in French, German, Latin and Greek.
